765 [Vrients' map of the Netherlands in Superb Colour] VRIENTS, Jan Baptist.
Inferioris Germaniæ Provinciarum Nova Descriptio... Antwerp: Plantin, 1612, Latin text edition. Original colour. 410 x 550mm. Lower centrefold reinforced. An excellent example on thick paper.
A most decorative map, orientated with north to the right, with cartouches for the title, scale and key, a compass rose and vignette sea battle. The map is believed to have been engraved before 1588, but only included in Ortelius's 'Theatrum' from 1608. As this map only appears in the later editions of the Theatrum it is comparitively rare: Van den Broecke estimates that only about 1,050 were printed. Like most of Vrients's maps it is slightly larger than standard and is often found with marginal defects: this example has full margins. VAN DEN BROECKE: 59, state ii of iv; the printing plate is still extant, in the Plantin Moretus museum in Antwerp.
