Rare map of southern Spain, apparently published during the early years of the War of the Spanish Succession caused by the succession of the Frenchman Philippe of Anjou to the Spanish throne, raising the spectre of France and Spain uniting under one crown, which was opposed by the British, Dutch and Germans. In the course of the war, the British captured Gibraltar and Minorca, both of which they retained at the end of the war.

A fine map of Portugal, engraved by Baptista van Doecticum, one of the leading engravers of his generation, working for Plancius, Waghenaer and others. Koeman writes that his engraving made the Waghenaer sea-charts 'the most beautiful maps of the period'. Here the quality of his work can be seen in the three baroque cartouches, the compass rose, galleons and sea-monsters. KOEMAN: Me 37a.

Orientated from East to West, comprising Portugal and parts of Andalucia, Castille and Asturias. With a decorative title cartouche at the  bottom surmounted by the arms of Castille and Portugal and flanked by soldiers conversing and servicing their weapons. On the right hand side, a cartouche with the scale, surmounted by putti and a surveyor with compass and plumb-line.

Detailed map of Minorca, drawn by Armstrong, a General of Ordnance, in 1756. Inset maps show the position of the Balearics in relation to Spain, and Mahon Harbour with the defences of Mahon, Georgetown and Fort St Phillippe. Beneath the map are inset prospects of Mahon and 'St. Philip's Castle'.Minorca was captured by the English under Sir John Leake in 1708; lost to a combined French and Spanish force in 1756; restored by peace treaty 1763; lost again 1782; retaken without the loss of a man 1798; and finally given up under the Treaty of Amiens 1802. The fortifications of Fort St. Philippe were the most expensive ever built by the British. .

The second map from Vacari's 'Atlante Topografico-Militare per servire alla storia delle Campagne e degli assedj degl' Italiani in Ispagna dal 1808 al 1813 ...', prepared by the Cavaliere Vacani, an officer of engineers in the campaign. The map was engraved by G.io (Gaudenzio) Bordiga, from the family of Milanese engravers. Although uncut, and without evidence of binding, the map is stamped 'Tab II' suggesting it was issued in a loose portfolio

The Battle of Vigo Bay, in the War of the Spanish Succession. It was an attempt by the joint Anglo-Dutch forces under Admiral Rooke to capture a Spanish treasure fleet that had recently arrived in Vigo from Havana. Despite the heavy defences Rooke won a famous victory, although the bulk of the silver bullion escaped him. Rumours that the treasure sank in the bay was incorporated into the plot of Jules Verne's novel 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea'; Captain Nemo's crew earn money by salvaging amongst the wrecks.Published in Rapin & Tindall's 'History of England'.
