Scarce broadsheet plan, oriented with north to the bottom, engraved by Belgrano the year before the city finally fell to the Turks after a 24-year campaign.

One of the most decorative maps of Crete, based on the map by Sébastian de Pontault Beaulieu, a French military engineer who had mapped the fortifications of many Mediterranean islands. His map of Crete was published in 1674, only five years after Crete had fallen to the Turks after a 24-year seige. The seas around the island are filled with galleons & galleys representing this epic struggle. Above the map the title is on a banner held aloft by putti, and the corners have plans of the fortfications of Canea and Candia. Under the map are four more plans, and around the whole is an engraved frame-like border. ZACHARAKIS: 2392.

A detailed map, also showing depth measurements around the coasts. Engraved by P.F. Tardieu for volume II of the 'Voyage pittoresque en Grèce'. Choiseul-Gouffier travelled to the Levant with the Marquis de Chabert in 1776, then spend several years as ambassador to Constantinople. Volume I was published in 1782; Vol. II 1809, having been delayed by a period of exile in Russia caused by the French Revolution; and Vol III, posthumously, in 1822.
